Nascida Carmelita Madriaga no ano de 1920 em Trajano de Moraes, interior do estado do Rio de Janeiro, a jovem Carmen Costa, então com 15 anos, saía de sua cidade para trabalhar na capital federal, na casa do “Rei da Voz” Francisco Alves, como doméstica, participando inicialmente do programa de calouros de Ary Barroso, incentivada pelo seu patrão.
